Scientific Hypothesis, Theory, Law Definitions
Scientific Hypothesis, Theory, Law Definitions Words have precise meanings in science. For example, theory, law, and hypothesis dont all mean the same thing. Outside of science, you might say something is just a theory, meaning its a supposition that may or may not be true. In science, however, a theory is an explanation that generally is accepted to be true. Heres a closer look at these important, commonly misused terms. Hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess, based on observation. Its a prediction of cause and effect. Usually, a hypothesis can be supported or refuted through experimentation or more observation. A hypothesis can be disproven but not proven to be true. Example: If you see no difference in the cleaning ability of various laundry detergents, you might hypothesize that cleaning effectiveness is not affected by which detergent you use. This hypothesis can be disproven if you observe a stain is removed by one detergent and not another. On the other hand, you cannot prove the hypothesis. Even if you never see a difference in the cleanliness of your clothes after trying a thousand detergents, there might be one more you havent tried that could be different. Model Scientists often construct models to help explain complex concepts. These can be physical models, like a model volcano or atomà or conceptual models, like predictive weather algorithms. A model doesnt contain all the details of the real deal but should include observations known to be valid. Example: Theà Bohr model shows electrons orbiting the atomic nucleus, much the same way as the way planets revolve around the sun. In reality, the movement of electrons is complicated but the model makes it clear that protons and neutrons form a nucleus and electrons tend to move around outside the nucleus. Theory A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. A theory is valid as long as there is no evidence to dispute it. Therefore, theories can be disproven. Basically, if evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, then the hypothesis can become accepted as a good explanation of a phenomenon. One definition of a theory is to say that its an accepted hypothesis. Example: It is known that on June 30, 1908, in Tunguska, Siberia, there was an explosion equivalent to the detonation of about 15 million tons of TNT. Many hypotheses have been proposed for what caused the explosion. It was theorized that the explosion was caused by a natural extraterrestrial phenomenon, and was not caused by man. Is this theory a fact? No. The event is a recorded fact. Is this theory, generally accepted to be true, based on evidence to-date? Yes. Can this theory be shown to be false and be discarded? Yes. Law A scientific law generalizes a body of observations. At the time its made, no exceptions have been found to a law. Scientific laws explain things but they do not describe them. One way to tell a law and a theory apart is to ask if the description gives you the means to explain why. The word law is used less and less in science, as many laws are only true under limited circumstances. Example: Consider Newtons Law of Gravity. Newton could use this law to predict the behavior of a dropped object but he couldnt explain why it happened. As you can see, there is no proof or absolute truth in science. The closest we get are facts, which are indisputable observations. Note, however, if you define proof as arriving at a logical conclusion, based on the evidence, then there is proof in science. Some work under the definition that to prove something implies it can never be wrong, which is different. If youre asked to define the terms hypothesis, theory, and law, keep in mind the definitions of proof and of these words can vary slightly depending on the scientific discipline. Whats important is to realize they dont all mean the same thing and cannot be used interchangeably.

Analytic Hierarchy Process in Operations Management
The project deals with the issue statement where the content is included about the target market, poor management, and lack of supervision by the managers and the supervisors, the focus is given on the profits of the company and the sales of the Custom Gear Inc. The problem the Custom Gear is experiencing is being stated in the project, which includes lack of the order size, lack of the future growth, inventory and the production management and many others. The actions that have been taken by Mr. Rhodes are narrated in the project. Inappropriate production process, inappropriate target market, poor management, poor control system, suppliers are not efficiently delivering raw materials and the profit earned by the Custom Gear is not adequate. Lack of the policy of the order size: Eastern gear has accepted a huge lot of the order size which is been seen in the exhibit 2 of the case study. It can be seen that in the order size 1 the total number of orders are taken are 80. In size 2, the number of orders is 53. In size 3 the number of orders are 69 and so on. On the other hand, President of the Eastern Gear has also taken decision to accept the huge orders from the customers. Lack of planning for growth: It appears that the company does not have any plan to expand their business in the future. This may be the reason and the company can face problems with respect to the cash flows, problems of capacity and other problems that are associated with the growth of the company. Inventory and production control: The expediting seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Twenty percent of the total orders have the rush tags on it. The processing time of the production has increased from two to four weeks, and there does not seem the production and inventory system are not in place. There are certain orders are being handled on the rush basis and that may be disruptive with the smooth flow of the production. Objectives that are followed in the operations: It is not clear that the operations should be focusing on the cost of the product, delivery and quality of the product and the flexibility. The focus should be laid down on the objectives of the operations. The order entry system is been flawed: The time is lost between the design that is desired by the customer is flawed because the order is taken by the James and therefore, is reviewed by the engineer. The problems that are faced by Mr. Rhodes are been divided into four parts: 1. Production process, 2. Target market, 3. Management, 4. Suppliers. In case these problems are resolved, the impact of these will be seen in the goodwill of the company. The sluggish production process of the Custom gear has caused problems related to the delays in the production, late deliveries and the poor quality of the product. The main problem of the production process of the custom gears is the standard job shop layout. Every workflow has the set of the processes. Depending on the operations, the materials flow from one work centre to another. The cycle below shows the path that the typical order will follow is: Taking into consideration the floor layout of the Custom gear, it can be taken into account that the work centreââ¬â¢s are not arranged into the correct order of the workflow. They can be said to be unstructured. To get rid of this problem the layout of the shop should be arranged in the following manner: The main target of the Custom Gearââ¬â¢s is the engineering research and the development laboratories or the manufacturers. These result in the number of the small number of the gears. Custom gear is losing the market share as it is targeting small manufacturers who order very small amount of the gears from the company. This results in the low sales and revenue for the company. In order to increase the sales as well as the profits of the Custom Gear should try and target the large companies that are in need of the more of the custom gears. Doing this Custom Gear does not have to find more of the customers because the profits gained from one company would be huge. The management issues that the Custom Gear is facing are the past due raw materials in the shop. The manager and the supervisor must take note of the inventory that is lying on the shop. The materials that have expired are mostly because of the errors that have been caused by the supervisor or the manager. In order to get rid of this problem the supervisor should take extra care while placing the orders with the suppliers and avoid wastage of the resources. The company has also recorded many lost orders. Therefore, in order to get rid of the problem the management should ensure that all the orders are properly documented this ensures that the files should not be missing and there exists no complaints from the customerââ¬â¢s side about the lost orders. The operation strategy is related to the product, process, method, quality, cost and scheduling. Moreover, like any other organization the Custom gear has the definite relation with the operations strategy: The design of the product should have a match between the operations management, finance department and the supply chain management and should look at the customers need. The methods take into account the process of transforming raw material into the finished products. The process considers the conversion of inputs into outputs. Therefore, these two process in closely linked to the process design. The process selection and the facility layout takes into account the implications of the supply chain management. A cost is the variable factor that affects the pricing and the profits of the organization. Organizations that have high degree of productivity in comparison with their competitors have a comparative cost advantage. Custom Gear must plan the schedule orders deliberately. The rush orders and the large orders should be made carefully. Operating resources are necessary for the personnel and material which is generally necessary to carry out the project. The examples of the operating resources are materials, machines, labor, tools, fixtures and many others. Custom Gear must complete the process of the operating resources. The above-mentioned analysis that is been done on the Custom Gear Inc. the lack of proper and efficient operational controls will bring adverse changes in the organization. The sluggish production process, selection of suppliers and objectives of the sales target, the poor layout of the job shop also slowed down the production process and created confusion. The Custom Gear should target the large-scale manufacturing companies where they can get huge orders and earn the maximum revenues out of it. The production process should be changed the quality of the products should be given maximum attention. The resources that are getting wasted should be given utmost importance by the supervisor and the managers. Armstrong, G., Kotler, P., Harker, M., & Brennan, R. (2012).à Marketing: an introduction. Consumer behavior - Assignment Example The PBS site has incorporated various things which children require during development period (Comstock & Scharrer, 65). It has materials for education which can persuade the kids to develop appetite for reading. It also has parents and teachers guide that can help children understand what their teachers and parents want from them. This can make children to pursue things that will please their teachers and parents. The site also contains other materials for young people such as DVDs, books, type of cloths they should wear, type of parties they should attend to, and the games they should play. According to Comstock & Scharrer (87), many children love cartoons hence the site has used cartoons which entice children to follow the advertisements displayed for them. The mobile cartoon images direct the children on what they want to. The kids may post the question or navigate the site by clicking the cartoon image. This website is well developed to help youngsters to acquire acceptable behavior in the community. The ordinary websites contains a lot of information misleading which is misleading to youngsters. For example they use images of children taking junk foods and enjoying television programs which have no content for the young people. This has resulted to youngsters developing health complications due the improper

United States Managed care organizations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
United States Managed care organizations - Essay Example Despite the federal government having some public funds to compensate the public on sickness and death, there lacked public programs and legislations that would facilitate the realization of these efforts by the government. The raising concerns of wage loss were because of failure to be paid in the event of illness. This led to the introduction of insurance schemes (sickness funds) to cover against loss of wages due to illnesses by workers. There arose evolutionist reformers in the progressive era of the early 20th century whose motives were to address social concerns especially for the working group (Palmer para 4-5). The efforts of the reformers received great support by the government of Roosevelt who equally highly esteemed the health of the people. The early period of the century, saw combined efforts by the AMA (American Medical Association) and the AALL (American Association of Labor Legislation) design and formulate legislations and health care bills that were meant for effec ting the universal accessibility of health care to the U.S citizens. Shortly after these moves, the reformers introduced the concept of cost of illness as against concentrating on the lost wages through which they brought about the concept of ââ¬Ësicknessââ¬â¢ insurance. Health sector regulations were not left behind as well in the reforms with the end of great depression (1935) marking the introduction of social security act. The great depression had serious implication to every American as well as the various departments such as the health care sector with general low finances in circulation within the entire economy. This therefore encouraged the insurance sector to introduce the medical covers through which medical expenses to the public would be easily met. Latter on some employers took to their role to provide health care to their employee, which equally marked great steps. By the mid century, over two thirds of the U.S citizens enjoyed some form of medical coverage over the private insurance schemes. However, the achievement of compulsory national health insurance as were the efforts of the reformers failed due to the opposition s that resulted from the doctors, business, insurance sector as well as some labor groups. However, by the year 1965, great steps had been taken within the sector and there was assenting to the legislation to universal health care in the United States (Palmer para 16-20). According to a brief by the Maine Health Access Foundation, the last thirty years have seen great efforts by the state government to improve on the accessibility of health care support through insurance especially to the uninsured. Notable efforts and progress has actually been experienced in three leading states in the efforts of reforming the health sector; Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine. The states have undertaken multiple roles in the health care provision system of America by serving as a regulator, administrator and a purchaser among other roles. The comprehensive health care reform has been a great phenomenon to be implemented within many of the U.S states. The guiding factor to these notable reforms has been to provide universal, quality and affordable services in health care to all her citizens. Therefore, individual states have been responsible in developing and

Muslim Women Essay -- Immigration Islam Essays Papers
Muslim Women When I chose the topic of Americanization of immigrant Muslim women, I think I expected a straightforward, easy to categorize, research project. On the contrary, what I found was surprisingly different. While I think of myself as a liberal, open-minded female, this project gave me a very new perspective on myself and many of my views as well. Muslim women living in the United States are quite honestly more diverse, more complex, more structured, more contemplative, and more culturally intuitive than I could have ever imagined in my limited experience and knowledge of them. The ââ¬ËAmericanizationââ¬â¢ I sought to illustrate turned out to resemble something closer to a religio-cultural tug-of-war than the predicted homogeneous transformation, or adaptation, to our Western society and religious orientation. à à à à à The women whose lives I read about (individually as well as in group studies) seemed without exception to be in a constant state of tension from numerous external and internal sources. The many token examples of varying degrees of Americanization- or in some cases, resistance to this phenomenon- included, but were not limited to, wanting to uphold traditional homeland customs and practices; asserting new freedoms to take on more responsibility in religious and political arenas; working to improve traditional inadequacies of U.S. mosques to better accommodate women of faith; the dilemma of appropriate dressing for religious and professional communities; challenging traditional and current marriage practices and the difficulties associated with them; and maybe most significantly, combating the general naivetà ©, or even outright discriminatory ignorance of Americans about Islam. Considering the fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world (between n ew births and the increasing number of conversions), and the United States is arguably the most influential and powerful country in the world, the last of these examples must, and will, be given some extra attention at the end of this paper. Finding Balance Between Islamic Tradition and U.S. Culture à à à à à Although almost every source I consulted stressed the progressive nature of the Quran and its ability to adapt to changing society, I found that a main thrust of the American Muslim communities was best exemplified in a quote from Carol L. Twilight 18. THE HUNT
18. THE HUNT They emerged one by one from the forest edge, ranging a dozen meters apart. The first male into the clearing fell back immediately, allowing the other male to take the front, orienting himself around the tall, dark-haired man in a manner that clearly displayed who led the pack. The third was a woman; from this distance, all I could see of her was that her hair was a startling shade of red. They closed ranks before they continued cautiously toward Edward's family, exhibiting the natural respect of a troop of predators as it encounters a larger, unfamiliar group of its own kind. As they approached, I could see how different they were from the Cullens. Their walk was catlike, a gait that seemed constantly on the edge of shifting into a crouch. They dressed in the ordinary gear of backpackers: jeans and casual button-down shirts in heavy, weatherproof fabrics. The clothes were frayed, though, with wear, and they were barefoot. Both men had cropped hair, but the woman's brilliant orange hair was filled with leaves and debris from the woods. Their sharp eyes carefully took in the more polished, urbane stance of Carlisle, who, flanked by Emmett and Jasper, stepped guardedly forward to meet them. Without any seeming communication between them, they each straightened into a more casual, erect bearing. The man in front was easily the most beautiful, his skin olive-toned beneath the typical pallor, his hair a glossy black. He was of a medium build, hard-muscled, of course, but nothing next to Emmett's brawn. He smiled an easy smile, exposing a flash of gleaming white teeth. The woman was wilder, her eyes shifting restlessly between the men facing her, and the loose grouping around me, her chaotic hair quivering in the slight breeze. Her posture was distinctly feline. The second male hovered unobtrusively behind them, slighter than the leader, his light brown hair and regular features both nondescript. His eyes, though completely still, somehow seemed the most vigilant. Their eyes were different, too. Not the gold or black I had come to expect, but a deep burgundy color that was disturbing and sinister. The dark-haired man, still smiling, stepped toward Carlisle. ââ¬Å"We thought we heard a game,â⬠he said in a relaxed voice with the slightest of French accents. ââ¬Å"I'm Laurent, these are Victoria and James.â⬠He gestured to the vampires beside him. ââ¬Å"I'm Carlisle. This is my family, Emmett and Jasper, Rosalie, Esme and Alice, Edward and Bella.â⬠He pointed us out in groups, deliberately not calling attention to individuals. I felt a shock when he said my name. ââ¬Å"Do you have room for a few more players?â⬠Laurent asked sociably. Carlisle matched Laurent's friendly tone. ââ¬Å"Actually, we were just finishing up. But we'd certainly be interested another time. Are you planning to stay in the area for long?â⬠ââ¬Å"We're headed north, in fact, but we were curious to see who was in the neighborhood. We haven't run into any company in a long time.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, this region is usually empty except for us and the occasional visitor, like yourselves.â⬠The tense atmosphere had slowly subsided into a casual conversation; I guessed that Jasper was using his peculiar gift to control the situation. ââ¬Å"What's your hunting range?â⬠Laurent casually inquired. Carlisle ignored the assumption behind the inquiry. ââ¬Å"The Olympic Range here, up and down the Coast Ranges on occasion. We keep a permanent residence nearby. There's another permanent settlement like ours up near Denali.â⬠Laurent rocked back on his heels slightly. ââ¬Å"Permanent? How do you manage that?â⬠There was honest curiosity in his voice. ââ¬Å"Why don't you come back to our home with us and we can talk comfortably?â⬠Carlisle invited. ââ¬Å"It's a rather long story.â⬠James and Victoria exchanged a surprised look at the mention of the word ââ¬Å"home,â⬠but Laurent controlled his expression better. ââ¬Å"That sounds very interesting, and welcome.â⬠His smile was genial. ââ¬Å"We've been on the hunt all the way down from Ontario, and we haven't had the chance to clean up in a while.â⬠His eyes moved appreciatively over Carlisle's refined appearance. ââ¬Å"Please don't take offense, but we'd appreciate it if you'd refrain from hunting in this immediate area. We have to stay inconspicuous, you understand,â⬠Carlisle explained. ââ¬Å"Of course.â⬠Laurent nodded. ââ¬Å"We certainly won't encroach on your territory. We just ate outside of Seattle, anyway,â⬠he laughed. A shiver ran up my spine. ââ¬Å"We'll show you the way if you'd like to run with us ââ¬â Emmett and Alice, you can go with Edward and Bella to get the Jeep,â⬠he casually added. Three things seemed to happen simultaneously while Carlisle was speaking. My hair ruffled with the light breeze, Edward stiffened, and the second male, James, suddenly whipped his head around, scrutinizing me, his nostrils flaring. A swift rigidity fell on all of them as James lurched one step forward into a crouch. Edward bared his teeth, crouching in defense, a feral snarl ripping from his throat. It was nothing like the playful sounds I'd heard from him this morning; it was the single most menacing thing I had ever heard, and chills ran from the crown of my head to the back of my heels. ââ¬Å"What's this?â⬠Laurent exclaimed in open surprise. Neither James nor Edward relaxed their aggressive poses. James feinted slightly to the side, and Edward shifted in response. ââ¬Å"She's with us.â⬠Carlisle's firm rebuff was directed toward James. Laurent seemed to catch my scent less powerfully than James, but awareness now dawned on his face. ââ¬Å"You brought a snack?â⬠he asked, his expression incredulous as he took an involuntary step forward. Edward snarled even more ferociously, harshly, his lip curling high above his glistening, bared teeth. Laurent stepped back again. ââ¬Å"I said she's with us,â⬠Carlisle corrected in a hard voice. ââ¬Å"But she's human,â⬠Laurent protested. The words were not at all aggressive, merely astounded. ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Emmett was very much in evidence at Carlisle's side, his eyes on James. James slowly straightened out of his crouch, but his eyes never left me, his nostrils still wide. Edward stayed tensed like a lion in front of me. When Laurent spoke, his tone was soothing ââ¬â trying to defuse the sudden hostility. ââ¬Å"It appears we have a lot to learn about each other.â⬠ââ¬Å"Indeed.â⬠Carlisle's voice was still cool. ââ¬Å"But we'd like to accept your invitation.â⬠His eyes flicked toward me and back to Carlisle. ââ¬Å"And, of course, we will not harm the human girl. We won't hunt in your range, as I said.â⬠James glanced in disbelief and aggravation at Laurent and exchanged another brief look with Victoria, whose eyes still flickered edgily from face to face. Carlisle measured Laurent's open expression for a moment before he spoke. ââ¬Å"We'll show you the way. Jasper, Rosalie, Esme?â⬠he called. They gathered together, blocking me from view as they converged. Alice was instantly at my side, and Emmett fell back slowly, his eyes locked on James as he backed toward us. ââ¬Å"Let's go, Bella.â⬠Edward's voice was low and bleak. This whole time I'd been rooted in place, terrified into absolute immobility. Edward had to grip my elbow and pull sharply to break my trance. Alice and Emmett were close behind us, hiding me. I stumbled alongside Edward, still stunned with fear. I couldn't hear if the main group had left yet. Edward's impatience was almost tangible as we moved at human speed to the forest edge. Once we were into the trees, Edward slung me over his back without breaking stride. I gripped as tightly as possible as he took off, the others close on his heels. I kept my head down, but my eyes, wide with fright, wouldn't close. They plunged through the now-black forest like wraiths. The sense of exhilaration that usually seemed to possess Edward as he ran was completely absent, replaced by a fury that consumed him and drove him still faster. Even with me on his back, the others trailed behind. We reached the Jeep in an impossibly short time, and Edward barely slowed as he flung me in the backseat. ââ¬Å"Strap her in,â⬠he ordered Emmett, who slid in beside me. Alice was already in the front seat, and Edward was starting the engine. It roared to life and we swerved backward, spinning around to face the winding road. Edward was growling something too fast for me to understand, but it sounded a lot like a string of profanities. The jolting trip was much worse this time, and the darkness only made it more frightening. Emmett and Alice both glared out the side windows. We hit the main road, and though our speed increased, I could see much better where we were going. And we were headed south, away from Forks. ââ¬Å"Where are we going?â⬠I asked. No one answered. No one even looked at me. ââ¬Å"Dammit, Edward! Where are you taking me?â⬠ââ¬Å"We have to get you away from here ââ¬â far away ââ¬â now.â⬠He didn't look back, his eyes on the road. The speedometer read a hundred and five miles an hour. ââ¬Å"Turn around! You have to take me home!â⬠I shouted. I struggled with the stupid harness, tearing at the straps. ââ¬Å"Emmett,â⬠Edward said grimly. And Emmett secured my hands in his steely grasp. ââ¬Å"No! Edward! No, you can't do this.â⬠ââ¬Å"I have to, Bella, now please be quiet.â⬠ââ¬Å"I won't! You have to take me back ââ¬â Charlie will call the FBI! They'll be all over your family ââ¬â Carlisle and Esme! They'll have to leave, to hide forever!â⬠ââ¬Å"Calm down, Bella.â⬠His voice was cold. ââ¬Å"We've been there before.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not over me, you don't! You're not ruining everything over me!â⬠I struggled violently, with total futility. Alice spoke for the first time. ââ¬Å"Edward, pull over.â⬠He flashed her a hard look, and then sped up. ââ¬Å"Edward, let's just talk this through.â⬠ââ¬Å"You don't understand,â⬠he roared in frustration. I'd never heard his voice so loud; it was deafening in the confines of the Jeep. The speedometer neared one hundred and fifteen. ââ¬Å"He's a tracker, Alice, did you see that? He's a tracker!â⬠I felt Emmett stiffen next to me, and I wondered at his reaction to the word. It meant something more to the three of them than it did to me; I wanted to understand, but there was no opening for me to ask. ââ¬Å"Pull over, Edward.â⬠Alice's tone was reasonable, but there was a ring of authority in it I'd never heard before. The speedometer inched passed one-twenty. ââ¬Å"Do it, Edward.â⬠ââ¬Å"Listen to me, Alice. I saw his mind. Tracking is his passion, his obsession ââ¬â and he wants her, Alice ââ¬â her, specifically. He begins the hunt tonight.â⬠ââ¬Å"He doesn't know where -ââ¬Å" He interrupted her. ââ¬Å"How long do you think it will take him to cross her scent in town? His plan was already set before the words were out of Laurent's mouth.â⬠I gasped, knowing where my scent would lead. ââ¬Å"Charlie! You can't leave him there! You can't leave him!â⬠I thrashed against the harness. ââ¬Å"She's right,â⬠Alice said. The car slowed slightly. ââ¬Å"Let's just look at our options for a minute,â⬠Alice coaxed. The car slowed again, more noticeably, and then suddenly we screeched to a stop on the shoulder of the highway. I flew against the harness, and then slammed back into the seat. ââ¬Å"There are no options,â⬠Edward hissed. ââ¬Å"I'm not leaving Charlie!â⬠I yelled. He ignored me completely. ââ¬Å"We have to take her back,â⬠Emmett finally spoke. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠Edward was absolute. ââ¬Å"He's no match for us, Edward. He won't be able to touch her.â⬠ââ¬Å"He'll wait.â⬠Emmett smiled. ââ¬Å"I can wait, too.â⬠ââ¬Å"You didn't see ââ¬â you don't understand. Once he commits to a hunt, he's unshakable. We'd have to kill him.â⬠Emmett didn't seem upset by the idea. ââ¬Å"That's an option.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the female. She's with him. If it turns into a fight, the leader will go with them, too.â⬠ââ¬Å"There are enough of us.â⬠ââ¬Å"There's another option,â⬠Alice said quietly. Edward turned on her in fury, his voice a blistering snarl. ââ¬Å"There ââ¬â is ââ¬â no ââ¬â other ââ¬â option!â⬠Emmett and I both stared at him in shock, but Alice seemed unsurprised. The silence lasted for a long minute as Edward and Alice stared each other down. I broke it. ââ¬Å"Does anyone want to hear my plan?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Edward growled. Alice glared at him, finally provoked. ââ¬Å"Listen,â⬠I pleaded. ââ¬Å"You take me back.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he interrupted. I glared at him and continued. ââ¬Å"You take me back. I tell my dad I want to go home to Phoenix. I pack my bags. We wait till this tracker is watching, and then we run. He'll follow us and leave Charlie alone. Charlie won't call the FBI on your family. Then you can take me any damned place you want.â⬠They stared at me, stunned. ââ¬Å"It's not a bad idea, really.â⬠Emmett's surprise was definitely an insult. ââ¬Å"It might work ââ¬â and we simply can't leave her father unprotected. You know that,â⬠Alice said. Everyone looked at Edward. ââ¬Å"It's too dangerous ââ¬â I don't want him within a hundred miles of her.â⬠Emmett was supremely confident. ââ¬Å"Edward, he's not getting through us.â⬠Alice thought for a minute. ââ¬Å"I don't see him attacking. He'll try to wait for us to leave her alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"It won't take long for him to realize that's not going to happen.â⬠ââ¬Å"I demand that you take me home.â⬠I tried to sound firm. Edward pressed his fingers to his temples and squeezed his eyes shut. ââ¬Å"Please,â⬠I said in a much smaller voice. He didn't look up. When he spoke, his voice sounded worn. ââ¬Å"You're leaving tonight, whether the tracker sees or not. You tell Charlie that you can't stand another minute in Forks. Tell him whatever story works. Pack the first things your hands touch, and then get in your truck. I don't care what he says to you. You have fifteen minutes. Do you hear me? Fifteen minutes from the time you cross the doorstep.â⬠The Jeep rumbled to life, and he spun us around, the tires squealing. The needle on the speedometer started to race up the dial. ââ¬Å"Emmett?â⬠I asked, looking pointedly at my hands. ââ¬Å"Oh, sorry.â⬠He let me loose. A few minutes passed in silence, other than the roar of the engine. Then Edward spoke again. ââ¬Å"This is how it's going to happen. When we get to the house, if the tracker is not there, I will walk her to the door. Then she has fifteen minutes.â⬠He glared at me in the rearview mirror. ââ¬Å"Emmett, you take the outside of the house. Alice, you get the truck. I'll be inside as long as she is. After she's out, you two can take the Jeep home and tell Carlisle.â⬠ââ¬Å"No way,â⬠Emmett broke in. ââ¬Å"I'm with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Think it through, Emmett. I don't know how long I'll be gone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Until we know how far this is going to go, I'm with you.â⬠Edward sighed. ââ¬Å"If the tracker is there,â⬠he continued grimly, ââ¬Å"we keep driving.â⬠ââ¬Å"We're going to make it there before him,â⬠Alice said confidently. Edward seemed to accept that. Whatever his problem with Alice was, he didn't doubt her now. ââ¬Å"What are we going to do with the Jeep?â⬠she asked. His voice had a hard edge. ââ¬Å"You're driving it home.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I'm not,â⬠she said calmly. The unintelligible stream of profanities started again. ââ¬Å"We can't all fit in my truck,â⬠I whispered. Edward didn't appear to hear me. ââ¬Å"I think you should let me go alone,â⬠I said even more quietly. He heard that. ââ¬Å"Bella, please just do this my way, just this once,â⬠he said between clenched teeth. ââ¬Å"Listen, Charlie's not an imbecile,â⬠I protested. ââ¬Å"If you're not in town tomorrow, he's going to get suspicious.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's irrelevant. We'll make sure he's safe, and that's all that matters.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then what about this tracker? He saw the way you acted tonight. He's going to think you're with me, wherever you are.â⬠Emmett looked at me, insultingly surprised again. ââ¬Å"Edward, listen to her,â⬠he urged. ââ¬Å"I think she's right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, she is,â⬠Alice agreed. ââ¬Å"I can't do that.â⬠Edward's voice was icy. ââ¬Å"Emmett should stay, too,â⬠I continued. ââ¬Å"He definitely got an eyeful of Emmett.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠Emmett turned on me. ââ¬Å"You'll get a better crack at him if you stay,â⬠Alice agreed. Edward stared at her incredulously. ââ¬Å"You think I should let her go alone?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course not,â⬠Alice said. ââ¬Å"Jasper and I will take her.â⬠ââ¬Å"I can't do that,â⬠Edward repeated, but this time there was a trace of defeat in his voice. The logic was working on him. I tried to be persuasive. ââ¬Å"Hang out here for a week -â⬠I saw his expression in the mirror and amended ââ¬Å"- a few days. Let Charlie see you haven't kidnapped me, and lead this James on a wild-goose chase. Make sure he's completely off my trail. Then come and meet me. Take a roundabout route, of course, and then Jasper and Alice can go home.â⬠I could see him beginning to consider it. ââ¬Å"Meet you where?â⬠ââ¬Å"Phoenix.â⬠Of course. ââ¬Å"No. He'll hear that's where you're going,â⬠he said impatiently. ââ¬Å"And you'll make it look like that's a ruse, obviously. He'll know that we'll know that he's listening. He'll never believe I'm actually going where I say I am going.â⬠ââ¬Å"She's diabolical,â⬠Emmett chuckled. ââ¬Å"And if that doesn't work?â⬠ââ¬Å"There are several million people in Phoenix,â⬠I informed him. ââ¬Å"It's not that hard to find a phone book.â⬠ââ¬Å"I won't go home.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh?â⬠he inquired, a dangerous note in his voice. ââ¬Å"I'm quite old enough to get my own place.â⬠ââ¬Å"Edward, we'll be with her,â⬠Alice reminded him. ââ¬Å"What are you going to do in Phoenix?â⬠he asked her scathingly. ââ¬Å"Stay indoors.â⬠ââ¬Å"I kind of like it.â⬠Emmett was thinking about cornering James, no doubt. ââ¬Å"Shut up, Emmett.â⬠ââ¬Å"Look, if we try to take him down while she's still around, there's a much better chance that someone will get hurt ââ¬â she'll get hurt, or you will, trying to protect her. Now, if we get him aloneâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He trailed off with a slow smile. I was right. The Jeep was crawling slowly along now as we drove into town. Despite my brave talk, I could feel the hairs on my arms standing up. I thought about Charlie, alone in the house, and tried to be courageous. ââ¬Å"Bella.â⬠Edward's voice was very soft. Alice and Emmett looked out their windows. ââ¬Å"If you let anything happen to yourself- anything at all ââ¬â I'm holding you personally responsible. Do you understand that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠I gulped. He turned to Alice. ââ¬Å"Can Jasper handle this?â⬠ââ¬Å"Give him some credit, Edward. He's been doing very, very well, all things considered.â⬠ââ¬Å"Can you handle this?â⬠he asked. And graceful little Alice pulled back her lips in a horrific grimace and let loose with a guttural snarl that had me cowering against the seat in terror. Edward smiled at her. ââ¬Å"But keep your opinions to yourself,â⬠he muttered suddenly.
